Sports Illustrated Just Made History By Putting A Plus-Size Model On Its Cover

Model Ashley Graham  has made history by being the first plus-size woman on the cover of the infamous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Ashley, who is a model and body activist will feature on one of three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers, (along with UFC superstar and actress Ronda Rousey and model Hailey Clauson). The 28-year-old from Nebraska will be the first size-16 model to appear on the cover.

Ashley spoke to People Magazine about what this means: “I thought Sports Illustrated was taking a risk by putting a girl my size in the pages, but putting me on the cover? They aren’t just breaking barriers; they are the standard now. This is beyond epic.”

Graham has dedicated her cover to women who “never felt that they were beautiful enough”. She spoke about why this cover is so important for positive body image: “Girls who are insecure about their bodies, girls who feel fat, girls who have cellulite, girls who have stretch marks on their body — those are all the things that I had as a kid and I never had a woman like me growing up to look at”.

Ashley Graham has proved once and for all that beauty is not measured by pounds or kilograms; the model added that this cover isn’t just a celebration of her achievement, but a societal victory as well.

Twitter and everyone on it approves (as does the rest of the world of course).
