Christopher Cheary is about to answer for his despicable crime. He raped Sophia Acosta in 2011. Before he raped her, he tortured her. After he raped her, he killed her. The girl’s mother, Erika Smith, was out buying drugs at the time and left the child alone with this unstable Heroin addict.
When Erika Smith returned back to the house with the drugs, the couple smoked an unnamed substance before hearing a thud coming from upstairs. They went upstairs to find Sophia Acosta lying in a puddle of her own vomit. They called the ambulance, and when paramedics arrived they found the girl covered in water, lying in the living room. They took her to the hospital where she was pronounced brain dead. They found marijuana in her system. They decided to turn off the life support systems after it was clear she would never recover brain activity.
Cheary is just now being sentenced. Court proceedings revealed that the man had forced Sophia to call him ”daddy”; even though the two were not related. The jury recommended the death sentence. The decision will be made within the next few days.
The girl’s grandmother is pleased about the decision, saying, "This is justice. He deserved what he got. She was everybody’s daughter. Hopefully, I can relax a little bit more. It’s been hard. I had to do this for her."<br /><br />It has taken so long to finally bring this case to trial. No one knows why, but one factor might be that the original investigating officer, Exeter police officer Daniel Green, was murdered shortly after this event came to light.
