Elected Homecoming King Gives Crown To An Unlikely Student

In 2013, a high school senior named Jesse Cooper was nominated for Homecoming King alongside his two classmates, Drew and Zeke. But instead of planning to accept the crown like most students would happily do, these three students made an amazing pact — that whoever won would give up the crown to a fellow student named Scotty.

At the time, Scotty Maloney was a junior at Unionville Community High School in Unionville, Tennessee. Scotty has Williams Syndrome, which is a neurological disorder that inhibits learning and speech. The condition also results in an incredibly friendly and happy demeanor, and so Scotty was known at school for being someone who could make any gloomy day feel brighter.

When it came time for Jesse, Drew, and Zeke to agree on their pact, there were no strings attached, no ulterior motive; the boys simply wanted Scotty to feel appreciated for the person he is. “I’ve been blessed with so many things,” said Jesse who won the popular vote for king. “I just wanted Scotty to experience something great in his high school days.”

And then, it became official. During Homecoming, the principal told the entire class what the nominees had decided to do.
